"I promise you one thing: a lot of good will come out of this." -Tim Tebow
John Cena is the Tim Tebow of wrestling. As I was writing my last article, I came to this conclusion. The more I wrote, the more I realized this was true. Everything I wrote, I thought to myself "where have I heard this before?....Oh yeah! Tim Tebow." Apparently, I have conversations with myself and answer my own questions. So, I decided to document all of their similarities. But, instead of just writing about all of their similarities (that would be boring), I also proposed a little competition. Both men are athletes, which means they are competitors by nature...they should be used to this. Here we go!
Alright... Let's start with the easiest comparison: colors. Up until Wrestlemania this past year, John Cena's colors were orange and blue. Every Monday night, he ran into the ring sporting a bright orange T-shirt with blue letters spelling out "Never Give Up." Tim Tebow started his football career at the University of Florida. UF's colors? Orange and blue. But, after four years as a Gator, wearing orange and blue every Saturday, did he leave those colors behind? No! He was drafted by the Denver Broncos. Colors? Of course... orange and blue!!! Who wears the colors better? Well, since John Cena decided to change his colors, and Tim Tebow has stayed faithful to his...Tim Tebow is, hands down, the winner.
Both Cena and Tebow have hardcore haters. It's not because they are bad athletes or bad people in general. Actually, they are the complete opposite of that. They are hated because they do not fit the "norm" of all other athletes. This true hatred is expressed from, what Augie calls, "true sports fanatics or hardcore wrestling fans." Cena's haters hate him because he "never gives up" and no matter what he is put through, he remains the "good guy." Tebow's haters hate him because they feel he is not good enough to play in the NFL. They feel he should just give up. So, who has the worst haters? Well, no matter how much Tebow is "hated," he has never been booed while running on the field. Actually, he is still cheered... especially when Kyle Orton is playing terribly. On the other hand, Cena is booed by a few thousand wrestling fans every Monday night or during any wrestling event. for that matter. So, the winner has to be Cena!! He is hardcore hated the most.
Both Cena and Tebow have a great work ethic. Cena's motto is "Never Give Up!" No matter what the WWE dishes out, Cena comes off the ropes swinging. Nothing can hold him down and if someone tries to hold him down, he'll just give them an "Attitude Adjustment!" He makes sure to defy all odds. Tim Tebow is unstoppable. During the 2008 football season, the Gators lost one regular season game, which Tebow felt was his fault. After the game, Tebow made a speech to the press. The speech became famous, it now hangs outside of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Anytime anyone says anything negative about him, Tebow makes sure to prove them wrong. So, who has the greater work ethic? With the speech alone, Tebow is definitely the winner!
Another similarity between the two... their charity work. Tebow's work is mission trips in the Philippines. He was actually born there while his parents were on a mission trip in the Philippines. Tebow is also very active in his church and does everything to make himself a perfect role model. Every game at UF, his face paint included bible verses. Cena's choice: supporting the troops. He has participated in wrestling matches in Iraq and has done tours around Iraq and Afghanistan. While stateside, he actively speaks about the importance of supporting our troops overseas. Being a U.S. Marine, Cena's work is very important to me. On top of that, Cena has granted more "Make-A-Wish" moments than anybody in the past several years. However, the work that Tim Tebow and his family has done cannot be overlooked. So, to be fair, I must call this a tie. Both Cena and Tebow win!!
Another similarity between Tim Tebow and John Cena is how they want to protect their image. Cena has a DVD out titled "John Cena: My Life" which explains where he came from, where he's going and why he is who he is. He wants the world to understand his image. Tim Tebow wrote a biography entitled "Through My Eyes." This book explains his entire life, starting as a very small child. It explains why he is so passionate about life and why he is so determined to be perfect. And, I will have to admit...I own both of these. I have to say: they are both very interesting...but I will have to give this category to Cena.
The last similarity I found between Tim Tebow and John Cena: their die-hard fans. A good portion of their fans are children and women and I obviously support this similarity since I'm a woman and I love them both! Has anyone ever noticed the high-pitched screams when Cena enters the ring? You know you have... it's quite obvious. You might not be able to hear the difference in screams for Tebow, but it's obvious in other ways. I attended a book signing a few months ago and, when I looked around, I was surrounded by women of all ages and lots and lots of children...with their mothers. I'm pretty sure the only guy in line was Augie, who I'm sure was contemplating suicide the entire time. So, who has the better fans you ask? Well, since the face turn of CM Punk, I've noticed that a lot of John Cena fans are, unfortunately, turning into CM Punk fans. On the other hand, Tebow fans are just like Tebow... faithful. They are standing behind him no matter what. Actually, it looks like Tebow is gaining fans, as you hear the "we want Tebow" chants during the Broncos games when Kyle Orton isn't playing how fans want him to be playing. So, with faithful fans behind him, I must say: Tim Tebow wins this category.
Tim Tebow and John Cena will continue to have many similarities, and I will continue to call Cena "the Tim Tebow of wrestling." The final score may be 4-3 in favor of Tim Tebow, but, honestly, this little competition doesn't matter. They both will continue to win my heart through every football game or wrestling match. It's rumored that "The Marine 3" will be coming out. Maybe they will cast Tim Tebow. I could only be so lucky. If not, they could always just put him in "15 Rounds"!
